Europe
IX century
Romanesque type of European sword of High and, partly, Late Middle Ages (from about 1000 to 1350), used in Western Europe almost exclusively by the knights’ estate, and in Russia — in the princely army. Sometimes the name Capetian is used, by analogy with Carolingian. Together with the swords of the XIV—XV centuries in our time, they are sometimes combined with the term “knightly sword” or “arming sword”.
It is a development of the Viking age sword, which dates back to the swords of the era of the great migration of peoples and the swords of the Celts. Romanesque swords were slightly longer — 90-95 cm versus 63-91 cm, always had a noticeable narrowing of the edges, which was absent in early Carolingian swords. Such a narrowing shifted the center of gravity closer to the handle, which, on the one hand, somewhat weakened the force of the blow, but, on the other hand, made it possible to make this blow more accurate.
At the end of the XIII century, the development of defensive weapons leads to the fact that chopping blows become ineffective. In this regard, a new type of sword appears, which later researchers called Gothic.
