Roman Empire
IV century

The late Roman helmet was discovered in the village of Biberwier, on the Fernpass mountain road, in the district of Reutte, Austria, next to the ancient Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. Despite the age of the find – more than 1600 years, the helmet is very well preserved, probably due to the fact that it has been lying all this time in the cold Tyrolean Alps. Archaeologists were able to restore it almost completely. Biberwier helmet is one of the latest finds of helmets belonging to the “Kammhelme” type.
