Big sword type Z (special) from Chernaya Mogila. Rus, X-XI AD.
€ 510
Rus / Anglo-Saxonian
X-XI century
The pommel and crosshair were covered with inlay. Unfortunately, the heat of the funeral pyre melted most of the inlaid metal, but, nevertheless, it is obvious that the frontal surface of the sword parts is decorated with floral ornamentation. The search for analogues to the features of the ornamentation of the “big” sword from the Black Grave unexpectedly led to the UK. Here, back in 1967, a special group of swords was identified, named “Wallingford type”. The shapes of the pommels and crosshairs, and most importantly their ornamentation, largely coincide with the shape and ornamentation of the details of the sword from the Black Grave.
The presence of the Anglo-Saxon sword in the Black Grave is a vivid reflection of the complex ways of forming a multiethnic and receptive to foreign cultural innovations of the druzhin culture of Ancient Russia. The elder man buried in the Black Grave mound occupied a high position in the hierarchy of society, probably bore the Slavic name Chern, fought with an Anglo-Saxon sword and a nomadic saber, wore a Khazar helmet in battle, drank from a horn made in Russia, played hneftafl, prayed to the Scandinavian god, used a spear with a Christian cross, and owned a Byzantine gold.
