Find from Starigard-Oldenburg
IX-X century
In addition to the sword from the Chernihiv burial (Charnaya Mogila), the Z-special type included a sword from the Shchukowshchina region (Southeastern Ladoga region) and a fragmentally preserved sword, presumably found near the Rurik settlement in Novgorod. Pommels of a similar shape are also known from swords from Melun (Norway) and burial 74 (late X century) of the Starigrad cemetery/Oldenburg (Germany). Among the swords of the type “Z special” our attention was attracted by two swords from England – one actually found at Wallingford Bridge on the river Thames, and a sword also originating from the Thames, discovered in 1840.
