Sword from Gnezdovo burial C-2. Rus, Smolensk region, X century.
€ 450
Rus / Viking
X century
One of the most marvelous swords of the Viking Age with a cast hilt.
The sword was discovered in 1950, during the excavation of one of the largest and richest Gnezdovo mounds (C-2). It was bent and broken, and in this form it was placed in a pit. The details of the crossguard and the central part of the pommel are decorated with (gilded) overlays with relief ornament in the Borre style. The pattern consists of smoothly curving double-row ribbons with spiral curls. Animal paws are discernible in the bends of the weave. On the sides of the pommel head, human faces with characteristic “long strands” are depicted in full face. The end planes of the pommel and crosshairs facing the handle and the blade are covered with plates (tinned or silver-plated) with engraved geometric patterns (the option is available on request).
